"There's no use talking about the problem unless you talk about the solution." - Betty Williams, peace activist
In 2020, the first-ever Ivy-League hackathon, known as IvyHacks, will take place from October 1st to 4th. Combining the words “hacking” and “marathon”, a hackathon is a sprint-like event in which multi-disciplinary teams (including computer programmers, graphic designers, project managers, etc.) collaborate to create solutions under a time constraint.
For the first time in history, students from six of the world's flagship universities (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Princeton) join together to deliver IvyHacks, a globally accessible online hackathon. Backed by a team with decades of hackathon experiences combined, this global event will bring together innovators from all walks of life to target important global issues in the ultimate virtual hackathon experience.
Our mission is to enable a global audience to leverage technology in addressing current global problems centered on any of our four main tracks.
Social Issues: Strengthen, support, and mobilize resources for marginalized communities to counter deep historical inequities.
Healthcare: Build solutions that enable a safer, healthier future for all.
Remote Education/Remote Work: Reimagine the future of online learning and remote work: what is missing in today’s online work solutions? Where can the experience be exponentially improved?
Building a Technologically Connected Future: Project the future of technology in 10 years, and build it today. What industries are ripe for technological disruption?
Who can apply?
Participants will be selected via an open, online application where any incoming, current, or recent undergraduate/graduate student over the age of 18 and is part of the Class of 2020-2025 is eligible to apply. Participants are chosen based on academic prowess, innovative mindsets, and alignment with our mission. Applications are open now at https://apply.ivyhacks.com.
Why is there an application?
We want to guarantee that students from a wide range of schools and experiences are given an equal and fair chance to participate. Furthermore, we hope that the process will encourage registrants to be committed to building something awesome. If you've never been to a hackathon before, don't worry! We will have team building sessions, plenty of mentors, and workshops made especially for beginners.
Do I have to sign up with a team?
You don't have to sign up with a team, but it's certainly more fun! We allow teams of up to four people (they don't have to be from the same school), and while they can be specified on the application, you won't officially create your team until the event. If you don't have a team yet, we'll host a virtual social and team matchmaking events before the hacking begins for you to meet other amazing people - there will be plenty of opportunities for you to find a team. Remember to share IvyHacks with your friends, the more the merrier!
What are the rules?
Your project should be started from scratch and worked on only during the duration of the hackathon, and you may only incorporate outside resources (code, graphics, sound, etc) that are freely licensed and accessible to all participants equally. Of course, you must also maintain a positive, respectful attitude toward your fellow hackers throughout the event.
How much does IvyHacks cost?
IvyHacks is completely free to all participants. We are on a mission to provide a platform for innovation, accessible to individuals from all geographical and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Throughout this event, participants will:
Be inspired by speaker talks, fireside chats, and panels from leading industry experts at Google, Facebook, Tesla, and much more.
Network with our sponsors to learn more about their companies and upcoming internships/job opportunities
Learn new technologies via corporate and student-led tech workshops
Form lasting connections with students from different walks of life
Present solutions to a panel of judges to win over $10,000 worth of prizes.
